LONG BEACH, Calif. - San Diego State, having split two games yesterday on day one of the Long Beach State Tournament, closed out the tournament with losses to 12th-ranked Michigan and No. 4 Hawaii on Sunday. The Aztecs, who fall to 12-16 overall, dropped a 7-6 decision to the Wolverines and suffered a 9-3 defeat at the hands of the Rainbow Wahine.
SDSU trailed throughout the first half against Michigan, falling behind 2-0 after one quarter and 4-3 at halftime thanks to three Aztec second quarter goals.
San Diego State tied the game at 5-5 in the third quarter when Rachel Serna scored at the 2:58 mark in the third period. But in the fourth quarter, after SDSU tied the contest at six apiece, Michigan's Megan Hausmann tallied her second goal of the game with 3:33 remaining to seal the victory for the Wolverines.
For the game, Serna scored a team-high two goals, while Elana Cervantes, Savanah Kelley, Becca Ur and Stacy Werner each scored a goal apiece. Sarah Kilgore made seven saves in net for the Aztecs.
In SDSU's final contest of the tournament, the Aztecs gave up five first quarter goals to fall behind, 5-1, after the game's first seven minutes. In the second quarter, San Diego State scored twice to cut the deficit to 6-3 at intermission, but that would be the last time the Aztecs would score as they were shut out in the second half. Meanwhile, the Rainbow Wahine added three second-half goals to give the game its final score.
The Aztecs received goals from Cervantes, Serna and Werner in a losing effort, while Kilgore recorded five saves.
No. 13 San Diego State will be in action this Friday for the 4th annual Harper Cup against UC San Diego at the Kroc Community Center. The contest is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
