PROVO, Utah - Just as it did Friday night, Brigham Young came from behind in its final at bat, this time scoring nine runs in the bottom of the eighth to overcome a two-run deficit and defeat San Diego State, 18-11, Saturday afternoon. The contest was played before a partisan crowd of 2,064 at Larry H. Miller Field in Provo.

BYU (26-9-1; 12-3 MWC) sent 14 men to the plate, using 10 hits and a walk during its late rally as the Cougars fought back after they had trailed 11-6 after five innings. That offensive outburst in the eighth came against four Aztec relievers with left-hander Dan Bruckart (0-1) taking the loss.

After falling behind 4-0 after two innings, SDSU (10-24; 5-7 MWC) scored five times in the third on three hits, two walks and a BYU error.

After the Cougars took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the frame, SDSU scored six times in the top of the fourth to make it an 11-6 contest. The big blow in the inning was a two-out three-run home run by third baseman Lance Zawadzki to finish off the scoring. However, from that point on, the Aztecs could muster only three hits over the final five innings against three Cougar relievers.

Trailing by five, BYU fought back with two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to make it an 11-9 contest before mounting their game-winning offensive outburst in the eighth. Cougar reliever Matthew Jensen was the beneficiary of his team's late-inning heroics as he picked up the win to improve to 5-0.

San Diego State's Quintin Berry was the hitting star for the Aztecs with a double and two singles, two runs scored and a pair of RBI. In the process he lengthened his hitting streak to 22 games. Jake McLintock contributed a pair of singles in the losing cause.

SDSU will now return home to host UCLA on Tuesday, April 18, at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
