SDSU Hosts Long Beach State Before Closing MWC Play At The Two Utah Schools
* San Diego State (12-8; 3-2 Mountain West Conference) returns home from its successful trip to Colorado to host Long Beach State Tuesday on Senior Day. Indra Erichsen, the lone senior will be playing in her final home match of her career. The match, which was twice rescheduled due to inclement weather, is slated for a 2 p.m. start at SDSU Tennis Stadium.
After its last home match of season, SDSU will take on the Utah schools, Utah and Brigham Young, on Friday and Saturday to wrap up conference play.
Weekly Wrap Up
* The Aztecs went to Fort Collins, Colo., looking to improve upon its 1-2 conference record and came away with a 3-2 record heading into this weekend's final two conference matches of the season.
On Saturday, SDSU cruised to a 6-1 victory over Wyoming. The Aztecs used the momentum from their doubles sweep and carried it into singles play where they took five of six.
Alesya Vidov (No. 1) and Sisse Nielsen (No. 6) earned, 6-4, 6-3, wins, while Dita Hauerlandova (No. 2) and Eliska Krausova (No. 4) posted, 6-1, 6-1, victories over their respective Wyoming opponents. Nina Spaeth made quick work of Kim Romero at No. 5 with her, 6-0, 6-0, triumph to round out the Aztecs' the convincing win.
On Sunday, the match versus Colorado State was moved indoors due to the heavy snowfall in the area, but it was not enough to stop SDSU as it claimed a, 4-3, win.
The Aztecs swept the doubles point for the second consecutive match, but found the road to victory much more challenging than the day before.
The Rams took a 2-1 lead after their wins at Nos. 2 and 3, but once Vidov scored a three-set win at No. 1, SDSU followed with victories at Nos. 4 (Indra Erichsen) and 5 (Nielsen) to clinch the match and its third conference win.
Double-Double
* Winning the doubles point has been the key to SDSU's success this season. When the Aztecs win the doubles point, they are 10-2. When they sweep doubles play, the Aztecs are an impressive 7-1.
On the other hand, when SDSU loses the doubles point, it is only 2-6.
Winning at No. 1 also seems to be a good omen as the Aztecs are 8-2 when being victorious at the top spot.
Scouting the 49ers
* Long Beach State is 11-9 overall and ranked 74th in ITA Rankings. The 49ers are coming off of a 4-3 loss at the hands of UC Santa Barbara in a Big West Conference match on April 9.
LBSU and SDSU have played six common opponents (USC, Pepperdine, UC Riverside, UC Irvine, LMU and Oregon) this season with the 49ers going 4-2 in those matches, while the Aztecs have gone 3-3.
Scouting the Cougars
* Brigham Young is currently ranked No. 26 in the nation and boasts a record of 16-3 overall and 4-0 in the MWC. The Cougars have won four in a row, all of which were conference matches, to have the best mark in the league.
BYU is led by Lauren Jones, who plays the majority of the time at No. 1 singles. Olga Boulytcheva, Sofia Holden and Anastasia Sourkokva are also solid singles players who have totaled double-digit win figures.
Scouting the Utes
* Unranked Utah is 12-9 on the season and 2-2 in league play and is coming off a 7-0 loss to second-place New Mexico in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Utes are led by Elizabeth Ferris, who plays at No. 1 singles and doubles with Allison Hansen.
Series History vs. Long Beach State
* On Tuesday, the Aztecs will looking to improve to 26-0 all-time versus the 49ers. Last season, SDSU opened up the 2004 campaign with a 5-2 win in San Diego. This is will be the third attempt to get the match in since inclement weather postponed the other two tries.
Series History vs. Brigham Young
* The Aztecs are 16-19 all-time versus the Cougars. Last season BYU snapped a four-match losing streak to SDSU by beating the Aztecs 6-1 in Las Vegas. The last time these two schools met in Provo was in 2002 during the MWC Championships. SDSU won 4-1 in the semifinals before falling to UNLV in the championship.
Series History vs. Utah
* SDSU completes MWC regular season play at Utah and will be looking to continue its dominance over the Utes. The Aztecs have won the last five by a combined score of 31-1. Overall, SDSU is 13-1 all-time against Utah.
SDSU In The Polls
* The Aztecs have been ranked in every ITA poll this season. After starting the season in the mid, to low 60s, SDSU jumped to No. 25 after winning four straight and upsetting No. 8 Washington and No. 28 Michigan in the process.
Since then, the Aztecs have been ranked in the 30s and are now tabbed 40th in the country. With two wins this past weekend, SDSU should gain a couple of spots in the upcoming poll.
