SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis team opened the Mountain West Conference portion of the schedule with a 6-1 win over 57th-ranked Utah on Friday afternoon at SDSU Tennis Stadium to record its fourth consecutive victory. The Aztecs improve to 8-5 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while Utah falls to 12-4 on the season and 0-1 in the MWC.
For the fourth straight contest, SDSU claimed the doubles point by taking two of the three matches. Daniel Jung and Dontia Haynes were victorious at No. 2 by defeating Jason Yapp and Nick Coutts, 8-2. At the third position, Markus Dickhardt and Eugenio Romero downed the Utah duo of Tomasz Grzyb and Dan Mascall by a score of 8-5.
In singles, the Aztecs were straight set winners in five of the six matches.
Dickhardt, playing his first match of the season at No. 1, posted a, 6-1, 6-3, victory over Grzyb to record his third consecutive win. With the victory, the sophomore from Germany improved to 11-3 this spring.
At No. 2, 93rd-ranked and MWC player of the week Armando Carrascosa breezed through his match, beating Zach Ganger, 6-1, 6-2. Similar to Dickhardt, the senior notched his third straight win.
Later, Chris Groh added his name to the list of SDSU players who have won three in a row by defeating Miron Mann, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 3.
Following suit were Haynes, who won, 6-2, 6-4, over Coutts at No. 4 and Jung, who gave the Aztecs their sixth point with his, 6-4, 6-2, victory at No. 5.
SDSU continues its homestand tomorrow when it hosts Brigham Young at 10 a.m.
