SAN DIEGO - San Diego State couldn't capitalize on opportunities and San Diego got a two-out two-RBI double in the top of the eighth to rally past the Aztecs, 2-0. The win is the first for the Toreros in the 40 game series between the teams and forces a split of the season series with SDSU. The Aztecs fall to 15-8 and USD improves to 4-6.
Reigning Mountain West Pitcher of the Week Celena Velasquez (7-2) picked up the loss, despite pitching an outstanding game for SDSU, striking out 11 and walking none, but an error and a mishandled bunt allowed the Toreros to put a pair of runners in scoring position, and Gina McFarland doubled in the runs. USD's Christina Haake (2-2) picked up the win for the Toreros, striking out Megan McDonald with the tying runs on base to end the game.
SDSU now hits the road yet again March 11, for a doubleheader with Cal State Fullerton at 4 p.m., followed by a trip to Long Beach, for the Long Beach State Tournament, March 12-13.
