SAN DIEGO - San Diego State was held to three hits and the San Diego Padres broke open a close contest with four late runs as the Major League club downed the Aztecs, 6-0, at PETCO Park Wednesday night. A crowd of 15,077 witnessed the exhibition contest which served as a fundraiser for the SDSU Athletic Department and the SDSU baseball program. It was the first meeting between the teams since 1998.

Woody Williams, the Padres projected opening day starter next Monday, threw the first five innings for the pros, allowing a pair of hits while striking out seven. Both of those hits were two-out infield singles in the third by second baseman Kevin Perry and center fielder Quintin Berry.

The Padres took the lead with a pair of runs in the second off SDSU reliever Dan Bruckart, who walked Ramon Hernandez and hit Xavier Nady with one out. Khalil Greene brought home the first run with a single to center and Damian Jackson drove home the second with a sacrifice fly.

San Diego State's offense over the final four innings was limited to a bunt single by Kasey Perry in the sixth as four Padre pitchers retired12 of the Aztecs' final 13 batters.

San Diego State used a total of nine pitchers with junior Will Miller getting the starting nod. Miller retired the side in order in his one inning, and he and freshman Andres Esquibel (who pitched the eighth) were the only two Aztec hurlers to accomplish that feat.

The Padres put the game away with a four-run outburst in the seventh on a double, two walks, and hit batter and a pair of singles. Nady's bases-loaded single scored the first two runs with Jones and Robert Fick also collecting an RBI apiece in the inning.

San Diego State now resumes Mountain West Conference play as it travels to Las Vegas for a three-game series with UNLV. The opening contest between the Aztecs and Rebels is set for Friday, April 1, at 6:30 p.m. at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
