SAN DIEGO - San Diego State's 68th-ranked women's tennis team narrowly defeated No. 28 Michigan, 4-3, at SDSU Tennis Stadium on Thursday afternoon. It is the third consecutive win for the Aztecs and second straight over a nationally ranked opponent. SDSU's record now stands at 6-3.
The Aztecs began the afternoon by taking the doubles point. Dita Hauerlandova and Alesya Vidov won at number two by downing Michigan's duo of Leanne Rutherford and Allie Shafner, 8-6. At number three, SDSU's freshman pair of Nina Spaeth-Sisse Nielsen defeated Elizabeth Exon and Nina Yattali, 9-7
Singles play was close throughout as the dual match was decided by the final match of the afternoon.
After SDSU lost at number one, Spaeth (6-0, 6-1) and Hauerlandova (6-4, 6-1) both won to give the Aztecs a 3-1 lead.
But Michigan fought back winning at number six and three to knot the contest at three apiece.
In the deciding match at number four, Eliska Krausova and the Wolverine's Rutherford went three sets to decide the outcome. Krausova prevailed, taking the match, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4, to give SDSU the victory.
San Diego State will be in action on March 5, when it hosts Washington at noon.
