San Diego State's month-long spring football drills came to an end on Saturday morning with the Black team knocking off the Red squad, 28-14, in front of approximately 2,000 fans at the Aztec practice facility.
The underclassmen had strong spring games with freshman quarterbacks Darren Mougey and Kevin Craft combining for three touchdowns, freshman receiver DeMarco Sampson scoring two touchdowns and freshman linebacker Andrew Schantz tying for game-high tackle honors with five, including a quarterback sack.
The Black team took the lead early when Mougey found Chazeray Schilens for a 23-yard touchdown drive for the first points of the game. That lead was extended to 14-0 when another freshman quarterback, Kevin Craft, was 3-for-3 for 67 yards on a brisk 80-yard march that was capped with a 36-yard scoring strike to freshman Sampson.
Michael Franklin was the day's most productive player. He had a game-high 77 rushing yards on seven carries and he led both teams with seven receptions.
The Red squad got on the board and back into the game on an 80-yard, eight-play march midway through the second period. The scoring play was a 29-yard pass from Matt Dlugolecki to Brett Swain.
Following a fumble, the Red squad looked poised to tie the game, but Black team linebacker Freddie Keiaho wrestled the ball away from Michael Franklin and raced 77 yards for a score and a 21-6 Black team lead. There were only two turnovers in the game, both fumbles.
The Red team stayed in contention when it scored with just 1:16 remaining in the half. Dlugolecki led the Red offense on a 65-yard touchdown drive, completed by a nine-yard scoring strike to Marcus Edwards. Following a two-point conversion run by Michael Franklin, the halftime score stood at 21-14.
The Black squad, however, put the game away when Sampson scored his second TD of the game. The pass play from Mougey covered 48 yards and was the longest play of the game.
"I thought we had a very productive spring, especially the last couple of weeks," head coach Tom Craft said following the spring game. "Defensively, we came away feeling a lot better about our cornerback position. Jacob Elimimian has really stepped up, and with Terrell Maze and Donnie Baker at the other cornerback spots, we have a lot of hope. I thought our linebackers really stood out. Andrew Schantz and Freddie Keiaho were exciting and Joe Martin really solidified the outside position."
The Aztec quarterbacks finished strong on Saturday, passing for a combined 411 yards with five touchdowns and no turnovers.
"We want to make the decision early, hopefully in the first week of (fall) practice," Craft said of the quarterback race. "It will be an open three-way battle. We just want to make the decision early so we can be ready for our game against UCLA. We'll stay with one guy, unlike last year."
