LAS VEGAS, Nev. - San Diego State swept doubles play for a third consecutive match as it downed Air Force, 6-1, in the Mountain West Conference opener at Fertitta Tennis Complex on the campus of UNLV Thursday morning. The win is the Aztecs' third straight and improves their record to 10-5 on the season and 1-0 in conference play. The Falcons, meanwhile, fall to 8-8 overall and 0-1 in the MWC.
SDSU breezed through doubles play to give the Aztecs a 1-0 lead. At No. 1, Dita Hauerlandova and Alesya Vidov defeated Air Force's Karissa Walker and Kat Bushey, 8-4. The win was the duo's fourth consecutive and third at the one position.
At No. 2, Indra Erichsen and Nina Spaeth cruised to an 8-1 victory over Erika Shortridge and Lauren Wilson, while the Aztec pair of Andrea Hermansen-Sisse Nielsen won at No. 3 by a score of 8-3.
It was more of the same in singles as SDSU posted wins in five of the six matches. Vidov recorded a, 7-5, 6-0, win over Bushey at No. 1. Meanwhile, Hauerlandova continued her impressive play by winning in three sets at No. 2 for her seventh consecutive victory.
At Nos. 3-5, the Aztecs lost only two games. Hermansen won her match by a score of 6-2, 6-0, while Erichsen and Spaeth each won their respective matches by 6-0, 6-0, scores. Thanks to her win at No. 5, Spaeth now has a streak of 10 consecutive victories.
No. 33 San Diego State will return to action tomorrow when they play at 35th-ranked UNLV. The match is slated for a 10 a.m. start.
