LONG BEACH, Calif. - Stacy Werner recorded her second hat trick of the season, but it was not enough as the 12th-ranked San Diego State water polo team fell to No. 3 Long Beach State, 6-5, at Campus Pool Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Aztecs drop to 9-10 on the season and 2-6 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while the 49ers improve to 15-3 overall and 7-0 in league play.

San Diego State trailed 3-0 after one quarter and 4-0 at halftime. Drue Wawrzynski scored first for Long Beach State, followed by a pair of goals by Cassie Azevedo to put the 49ers up by three. Robyn Gordin found the back of the net at the 6:30 mark in the second quarter to give Long Beach State a four-goal cushion.

In the third quarter, SDSU came out attacking, as Werner scored twice on the Aztecs' first two possessions. San Diego State's leading scorer, Rachel Serna, added a goal of her own at the 3:03 mark to cut into the 49ers' lead.

But in the fourth quarter, Long Beach State's Gordin scored once again to increase the lead to 5-3. Werner responded less than two minutes later with her third goal of the afternoon to bring the Aztecs to within a goal. Unfortunately, the 49ers' Jeanine Jackson put one past SDSU goalkeeper Sarah Kilgore (seven saves) with 1:04 remaining to give Long Beach State all the goals it would need. Elana Cervantes chipped in with a goal with 0:48 left, but the 49ers ran out the clock to win the game.

The Aztecs will return to action March 26 when they take on Cal Baptist at the Aloha Rainbow Classic in Hawaii.
