SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis match against 36th-ranked Virginia Commonwealth was halted due to inclement weather Saturday afternoon. Rain initially delayed the match and in an effort to get the match in, both teams agreed to play singles before doubles once the rain let up. When play resumed, VCU held a 3-2 lead when the rain came back resulting in cancellation of the match. There is no official winner since neither team tallied four points.
Virginia Commonwealth took a 2-0 lead after Dontia Haynes fell in straight sets to Daniel Lohff, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 4 and Armando Carrascosa lost, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 3 to Sergi Arumi.
The Aztecs got on the board and cut the lead to 2-1 when Daniel Jung won at No. 5, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, over Sebastian Ripoll. Moments later, at No. 2, Markus Dickhardt was defeated by Marton Ott in three sets, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4.
SDSU pulled within one, 3-2, when Benedikt Stronk won at No. 1 in a three set thriller versus No. 13 Arnaud Lecloerec. After losing the first set, 4-6, the junior came back and won the second and third sets, 6-3, 7-6(5).
At No. 6, Chris Groh, who had lost the first set, 5-7, battled back in the second to claim a 7-6(8) victory. Then just as the third set was getting underway, the rain returned and the match was called.
Due to Virginia Commonwealth's travel plans, the match will not be resumed.
The Aztecs will be action March 29-30 when they head to Santa Barbara, Calif., to take on Harvard and UC Santa Barbara. Both matches are slated for a 1:30 p.m. start.
