SAN DIEGO - San Diego State red-shirt freshman quarterback Darren Mougey threw for two touchdowns and ran for another in the team's third of four spring scrimmages Saturday at the Aztecs on-campus practice facility.

"The scrimmage today was better overall," SDSU head coach Tom Craft said. "Procedure-wise, it was a better scrimmage just based on not having as many penalties or mental errors in the offensive flow. The scrimmage went a lot better, particularly for the defense. Overall, I was really pleased."

Mougey started the day off with a 20-yard scamper for a touchdown, capping a 10-play, 85-yard drive. A four-yard run by DeMarco Sampson ended another 10-play scoring drive, while Mougey found wide receiver Robert Ortiz on a four-yard pass in the back of the end zone for another score.

Sophomore flanker Chaz Schilens accounted for each of the final two touchdowns, catching a seven-yard pass from freshman quarterback Kevin Craft and making a 26-yard grab from Mougey.

Mougey completed eight of his 12 passes and also had four carries for 21 yards on the ground. Kevin Craft saw his most extensive playing time in the spring scrimmages thus far, completing eight of his 13 passing attempts for 96 yards and the one touchdown to Schilens.

On the ground, the offense was limited to 97 total yards on 28 carries. Senior Michael Franklin was the leader with five carries for 26 yards, while sophomore Lynell Hamilton had a team-best seven carries.

Nine different players caught at least one pass with four going to Hamilton and three each by Schilens and Ortiz. Sophomore wideout Brett Swain also had two receptions for 42 yards.

Defensively, the Aztecs stopped the offense on two occasions on drives that started inside the five-yard line and allowed only three scoring drives of more than 25 yards. Senior Freddie Keiaho and sophomore Nick Osborn each had six tackles, while three others had four each. The defense managed just two sacks after having seven in last week's scrimmage. Safety Josh Gomez had the lone interception of the morning.

San Diego State concludes its month-long spring practices with the annual Red & Black game on Sat., March 26, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Aztec practice facility.
