SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's golf team came in seventh overall with a 54-hole score of 1049 (+185) Wednesday at the Donnis Thompson Invitational in Kaneohe, Hawaii. The Aztecs were just one stroke away from tying for sixth with Weber State, while No. 22 Washington State claimed the team title with a 976 at the challenging par-72, 5,829-yard Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course.
The Aztecs were led by freshman Jackie Kazarian (Dana Point, Calif.), who tied for 18th place, marking the second time in two events that she has finished in the top 20. Kazarian ended this week's tournament at 40-over 256, including a 90 in the third and final round Wednesday.
Kazarian's classmate, Anna Booth (Coffs Harbour, Australia), was just two strokes behind her with a 258 to tie for 21st on the individual leader board.
Senior Megan Mulhaupt (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) notched the team's low round of the day with an 85 to vault from 40th into a tie for 35th place with a 270. Freshman MacKenzie Swecker (Winnemucca, Nev.) also logged her best performance of the tournament in the final 18 holes with a 18-over 90 to come in 44th. Sophomore Jamie Oliver (Los Alamitos, Calif.) rounded out the SDSU competitors with a 97 in the third round for a 56-over par 273.
Senior co-captain Veronica Ojeda (San Diego, Calif.), competing as an individual, tied for 27th place with a 261 (+45), including a third round score of 90.
Washington State's Kim Welch won the individual title for the second year in a row, beating out teammate Jay Lee Longbottom and USF's Joan Shimozaki by one stroke, carding a 19-over 235. Welch won last season's event with a three-over 219.
San Diego State will be back in action next week for the Oregon Duck Invitational, March 21-22, at the Shadow Hills Country Club in Junction City, Ore.
