SAN DIEGO - San Diego State snapped its two-match losing streak by defeating 57th-ranked Tulsa, 4-3, Tuesday afternoon at SDSU Tennis Stadium. With the win, the 37th-ranked Aztecs move to 8-5 on the season and 4-2 on their current seven-match homestand. Tulsa, meanwhile, falls to 7-10 overall.
The Aztecs earned the doubles point to start the afternoon by sweeping all three matches.
Playing for the first time together at No. 1 were Indra Erichsen and Nina Spaeth, who defeated Tulsa's top team of Daniela Muscolino-Carla Zabaleta, 8-6. At two, Dita Hauerlandova and Alesya Vidov took care of Santie Delport-Timberly Greenly, 8-6, for their second consecutive doubles win. And at No. 3, the team of Andrea Hermansen-Eliska Krausova won by a score of 8-2.
In singles action, Muscolino got Tulsa on the board with her win at No. 1 over Vidov, 6-1, 6-1. The Golden Hurricane took a brief 2-1 lead when Delport defeated Erichsen at No. 2 in straight sets.
SDSU tied the match at two as a result of Spaeth's 6-3, 6-4, win over Kindsay Grimes. The victory marks her eighth consecutive singles victory. Later Hermansen fell, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 3, but Krausova tallied her sixth win of the season to knot the match at three apiece.
The deciding match was at No. 2 where Hauerlandova and Lisette Pereira battled it out. Hauerlandova won a hard-fought first set, 7-6. But Pereira came out in the second and put the pressure on the SDSU junior. Down 4-3, Hauerlandova broke Pereira and won three straight games to take the set and the match for the Aztecs.
San Diego State will be back in action next Tuesday, March 22, when they host Ohio State. The match is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
