SAN DIEGO -
San Diego State Director of Athletics Mike Bohn announced Tuesday that Jim Tomey has resigned as head women's basketball coach and will take on another position within the athletic department, effective immediately.
"Jim Tomey represents the highest level of commitment and professionalism in collegiate athletics," Bohn said. "He has and will continue to be a valuable member of the Aztec program. He is a great ambassador of the University and we look forward to him being a part of the athletic department for years to come."
Tomey compiled a 25-58 (.301) overall record in his three years at the helm of the Aztec women's basketball program. He previously served as an assistant men's basketball coach at SDSU for three seasons (1999-2002) and helped lead them to a Mountain West Conference championship and an appearance in the NCAA tournament. Tomey was named the women's head coach in April 2002, his first collegiate head coaching position.
"At this point for me, my family and this program, I feel that it is best that I step away," Tomey said. "I have been climbing the mountain with this program for the last three years and at San Diego State for the last six years, throwing all my energy, heart and soul into its success. I believe that we've laid a foundation and building blocks for future success. I appreciate the opportunity and wish nothing but the best for these women and this program. I'm looking forward to taking on new challenges within the athletic department."
San Diego State finished its 2004-05 campaign last week at the Mountain West Conference championships in Denver, Colo., falling to eventual tournament winner New Mexico (81-52) in the quarterfinals. The Aztecs were 8-20 overall and 2-12 in league play, tying for seventh place.
Bohn indicated that a search to fill the head coaching position would begin immediately.
