MONTGOMERY, Ala. - San Diego State won the doubles point, something it has had trouble with recently, and went on to avenge last year's 7-0 loss, by claiming a 4-0 win over 68th-ranked William and Mary at the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic. With the win, the Aztecs finished with a record of 1-2 at the annual tournament and move to 5-5 on the season.
In doubles, Benedikt Stronk and Armando Carrascosa took care of Alex Fish and Colin O'Brien at No. 1, 8-6. Teammates Markus Dickhardt and Eugenio Romero followed with an 8-3 win at number three over Jeff Kader and Alex Cojanu to give the Aztecs the point.
The doubles point proved to be the turning point of the match as SDSU took care of business and won three singles matches and abandoned the remaining three.
Stronk gave the Aztecs a 2-0 lead with his upset win at number one over No. 59 Jeff Kader, 6-4, 6-2. Daniel Jung followed suit with a victory at No. 5 with his straight sets win over Matt Rubenstein, 6-3, 6-3. And Dickhardt gave SDSU its first win of the tournament and snapped its two-match losing streak when he beat Colin O'Brien, 7-5, 6-4, to give the Aztecs the victory.
SDSU will be back in action when it hosts No. 29 Virginia Commonwealth at noon.
