SAN DIEGO - The University of San Diego broke open a one-run game by scoring seven times over the final two innings in a 10-2 win over San Diego State Sunday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium. With the win, the Toreros (16-10-1) claimed the weekend series by winning two games at SDSU's field while the Aztecs (5-16) won the contest at USD.
San Diego State got on the board first on Curt Mendoza's sol home run in the second inning, his first round tripper of the season. The Aztecs extended their lead to 2-0 in the third when Kevin Perry scored from third on an RBI fielder's choice by his brother, Kasey.
SDSU starter Ben Coon breezed through he first three frames, but in the fourth gave up a leadoff single to Torero third baseman Jamie Hesselgesser that was followed by a home run from center fielder Shane Bucshini that knotted the score at 2-2.
Coon, who went seven innings in what was his second start of the season, saw USD take a one-run lead in the sixth on a pair of base hits and sacrifice fly by Jordan Abruzzo. Coon, who gave up four runs on sox hits on the afternoon, was saddled with the loss as he saw his record drop to 0-1.
Torero starter Josh Butler kept the Aztec offense in check after it scored in the third. Despite getting a man on base in each of those innings, SSU was unable to score as Butler, who struck out seven in his eight inning of work, evened his record at 3-3.
The visitors upped their lead to 5-2 with two runs in the ninth, scoring on a bases-loaded double play and an RBI triple by Abruzzo. They put the game away by scoring five times in the ninth on four hits, a hit batter and an Aztec error.
Curt Mendoza and Kevin Perry accounted for four of San Diego State's six hits on the afternoon and each scored a run.
San Diego State now prepares to open Mountain West Conference play next weekend when Utah visits Tony Gwynn Stadium for a three-game series beginning Friday, Mar. 18, at 6:00 p.m.
