LA JOLLA, Calif. - The San Diego State track and field team finished in second place at the 2005 San Diego Collegiate Track and Field Championships on Saturday at the Triton Track and Field Stadium on the campus of UC San Diego. The host Tritons won the six-team meet with 285 points, followed by the Aztecs (231.50) and Point Loma Nazarene (150.50).

"I'm pleased with how we competed today," said assistant coach Jennifer Nanista. "We tried people in different events and it was nice to get the first (outdoor) meet out of the way. We are looking forward to the Aztec Classic this weekend."

SDSU won 10 events at the meet, including a 1-2-3 showing in three events (100 meters, 200 and pole vault) and a 1-2 finish in the 1,600-meter relay.

Senior Heather Heron (Yakima, Wash.) and freshman Sherraine Pencil (Toronto, Ontario) opened up the outdoor season in style, earning four first-place finishes apiece - two as an individual and two in relay events. Pencil won the 100 (12.13) and 200 (24.84), while Heron took first in the 100- (14.14) and 400-hurdles (1:02.26.) The duo teamed with freshman Brittani Dudley (Oakland, Calif.) and sophomore Vonnie Fulford (San Fernando, Calif.) to win the 400-meter relay in 47.20 seconds, and joined Dudley and junior Nicole Carmier (Elk Grove, Calif.) in the victorious 1,600-meter relay (3:51.28).

Carmier also set a new collegiate best in the 400 (first place, 55.82) and tied a personal best mark in the high jump (5 feet, 6 inches). Sophomore Manhattan College transfer Lisa Naucler (Ljusdal, Sweden) was first in the 1,500 (4:37.19) and second in the 800 (2:11.29), and Dudley and Fulford each went 2-3 in the 100 (12.29, 12.32) and 200 (25.21, 25.48). Dudley also took third in her first-ever attempt in the long jump (17-10 3/4).
