SAN DIEGO - San Diego State broke open a one-run contest by scoring four times in the top of the fifth, then added seven more over the next two innings as it went on to a 13-6 victory over University of San Diego at USD's Cunningham Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Aztec win evened the weekend series at one game apiece as SDSU won for the third time in its last four outings to improve to 5-15. With the loss, the Toreros saw their record slip to 15-10-1.
Junior left-hander Alex Hinshaw (1-4) shut down the USD offense for six innings as he watched his teammates build a 13-1 lead and help him earn his first win of the season. He went 6.2 innings, allowing a total of four runs on five hits along with four strikeouts.
The Aztecs opened the game with a pair of runs as the first three batters gave them a quick 2-0 lead. A leadoff walked to Quentin Berry was followed by an RBI double from Kasey Perry, who score on James Guerrero's single off USD starter Matthew Couch (0-2). However, from that point, Couch retired the next 12 batters he faced and his team scored once in the third to make it a 2-1 contest.
Couch's string of 12 straight outs ended in the fifth when Curt Mendoza led off with a double left center, Before the inning was over, a two-run double by Berry and two-RBI single by Guerrero had added four runs and give the visitors a 6-1 lead.
In the sixth, the Aztecs added three more runs as they touched up a pair of USD relievers with a pair of walks, an RBI double by third baseman Grant Desme and a two-run single from second baseman Kevin Perry.
Desme was even more productive in the next inning when his bases-loaded double down the left field line scored three runs. He later scored on a single by Berry to increase SDSU's advantage to 13-1.
Freshman Joel Matthews threw the final 2.1 innings for the Aztecs, giving up two runs on three hits while striking out two.
James Guerrero finished the afternoon with three hits and three RBI while Desme had three hits (including a pair of doubles) with four RBI and three runs scored. As a team, the Aztecs hit a season-high six doubles.
The game also marked the starting debuts of twin brothers Kasey Perry (left field) and Kevin Perry (second base). Each collected a pair of hits with Kasey scoring twice and Kevin driving in two runs. It was the first time that brothers had started a game for the Aztecs since outfielder Bob Parry and third baseman John Parry played at SDSU during the 1987 season.
SDSU and USD wrap up their three-game weekend series on Sunday (Mar. 13) with a single game at 1:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium. It will be the Aztecs' final contest before they open Mountain West Conference play at home against Utah next weekend.
