FULLERTON, Calif. - San Diego State softball split a doubleheader at Cal State Fullerton Friday night, losing the first game, 4-2, before triumphing in the nightcap, 2-0. The Aztecs improve to 16-9, while the Titans move to 7-7 on the season.
In the first contest, Fullerton broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning on Candice Baker's two-out, two-run double to center. Cori Janelli (6-6) pitched well for SDSU, but a single and a walk forced her out of the game in favor of Celena Velasquez, who gave up the winning hit.
The Aztecs scored their runs on a sacrifice fly by Kristen Carranza in the first and an RBI groundout by Allison Smith in the fifth.
In game two, Velasquez (8-2) shut down the Titan's, striking out seven and allowing three hits in earning her fifth shutout of the year.
SDSU used a pair of walks, a stolen base, an error, and a wild pitch to score Erin Mahoney an grab a run in the top of the first inning, and it add another in the sixth on an RBI double by Bree Boyer to push the lead to 2-0.
The Aztecs were led at the plate by Mahoney, who went 3-for-7 with a double, stolen base and three runs scored, and by Boyer, who was 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run. Smith and Carranza netted an RBI each in the doubleheader.
SDSU now gets ready for play in the Long Beach State tournament March 12-13, taking on Indiana, Florida, Loyola Marymount and the host 49ers. The Aztecs and Gators begin play at 9 a.m. on Saturday, followed by SDSU and the Hoosiers at 11:15 a.m.
