MONTGOMERY, Ala. - San Diego State dropped a 4-2 decision to 27th-ranked Rice during the first day of the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic in Montgomery, Ala., on Thursday. The loss evens the Aztecs' record at 4-4 on the season.
Rice took the doubles point as a result of an 8-6 win over SDSU's Daniel Jung and Markus Dickhardt at No. 2. Once the Owls claimed victory at No. 3, the number one Aztec duo of Armando Carrascosa-Benedikt Stronk did not finish their match since the doubles point was determined.
In singles, No. 79 Dickhardt defeated Ben Harknett in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, and Dontia Haynes downed Ralph Knupfer by a score of 6-2, 6-3. The two SDSU wins were the only ones the Aztecs would pocket as they lost at Nos. 1, 2 and 6, with Jung's match at number five not being finished since the outcome of the match was already decided.
San Diego State continues action at the annual tournament on Friday.
