SAN DIEGO - San Diego State right-hander Bruce Billings has been named Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week. It marks the first time he has won the honor in his one year-plus at SDSU.
Billings, from San Diego, Calif., threw seven solid innings in the opening game of the Aztecs' three game series vs. South Alabama last week. He struck out six batters and scattered four hits, while walking two and allowing one unearned run. The sophomore from Morse High School in San Diego struck out at least one batter each inning he was on the mound and did not give up more than one hit in any inning.
Billings has not given up an earned run in his last 15 innings on the mound. In his previous outing at 22nd-ranked Long Beach State, he went eight innings, allowing one unearned run on five hits while striking out a career-high 10 batters.
This weekend the Aztecs will meet University of San Diego in a three-game series that begins Friday (Mar. 11) at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The teams will then meet at USD's Cunningham Stadium on Saturday (Mar. 12) at 1:00 p.m. and return to SDSU for Sunday's series finale at 1:00 p.m.
