LOS ANGELES - The 74th-ranked San Diego State men's tennis team was shutout by No. 2 UCLA, 7-0, Friday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The loss drops the Aztecs to 2-2 on the season, while the Bruins improve to 7-0.
UCLA won the doubles point to begin the day on the strength of three doubles victories. At number one, sixth-ranked Alberto Francis and Kris Kwinta of UCLA downed Armando Carrascosa and Daniel Jung, 8-4. SDSU's Benedikt Stronk and Chris Groh fell at number two to Benjamin Kohlloeffel and Luben Pampoulov, 8-2. In the third doubles match of the day, SDSU's duo of Markus Dickhardt and Dontia Haynes lost, 8-6, to Mathieu Dehaine and Chris Lam.
In singles play, 51st-ranked Carrascosa lost in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, to No. 8 Kohloeffel in a rematch of October's ITA Western Championships final at number one singles. The win put UCLA up 2-0 in the match.
Soon thereafter, the Bruins took a 3-0 advantage when No. 62 Lam of UCLA defeated Dickhardt, 6-1, 6-2, at number three singles.
The three-point deficit proved to be too much for the Aztecs to overcome as they lost the remaining singles matches at numbers 2, 4, 5 and 6 to close out the day.
SDSU will return to the court on Feb. 13 when they face the University of the Pacific at SDSU Tennis Stadium. The match is scheduled for a noon start.
