LONG BEACH - After a pair of pitchers' duals in the first two games of the San Diego State-Long Beach State series, there were some offensive fireworks in Sunday's finale at Blair Field in Long Beach. Unfortunately for the Aztecs, it was 49ers who did most of the hitting as they recorded a 6-1 victory to complete a three-game sweep of SDSU.
The loss extended San Diego State's current losing streak to six games as they fell to 2-11 on the year. For Long Beach State, it was their third straight win following a five-game losing streak as it improved to 8-6.
The Aztecs took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the second inning. Clayton Carson's leadoff double was followed by a sacrifice bunt attempt by designated hitter James Scott. LBSU catcher Chris Jones fielded the bunt and elected to throw to third, but was tool later to get Carson to give the Aztecs runners on the corners with no outs.
Jake McLintock then hit a bullet up the middle that was gloved by 49er starting pitcher Jared Hughes, who doubled Scott off first base. However, with Garrick Evans at the plate, Hughes uncorked a wild pitch allowing Carson to score the opening run.
Long Beach State took the lead with a pair of runs in third off SDSU starter Andres Esquibel (1-3). An inning-opening single by second baseman Cole Jacobsen and two-out back-to-back doubles by first baseman Brandon Godfrey and designated hitter Sean Boatright did the damage.
The 49ers added a third run two innings later, this time courtesy of an RBI double by Jones. They went on to add a trio of insurance runs over the final two innings off three SDSU relievers,
Second baseman James Guerrero led the Aztec offense on the day with three hits including a double as he improved his season average to .326. Lance Zawadzki had a single in his final at bat to extend his team-best hitting streak to 10 games.
San Diego State now returns home where it will face defending national champion Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday (Mar. 1) at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
