SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The 10th-ranked San Diego State water polo team split two games during day one of the Gaucho Invitational in Santa Barbara, Calif. The Aztecs finished second in their pool after defeating Marist and falling to the host UC Santa Barbara in overtime on Friday. After the split, SDSU's record stands at 3-5 overall.

In the first game of the day, San Diego State cruised to a 17-4 victory over Marist. The Aztecs received four goals from junior Rachel Serna, two from Stacy Werner and Cassie Zebisch and one apiece from nine different players.

SDSU took the lead early, outscoring the Red Foxes 4-2 after one period and never looked back. After two periods, the score stood at 8-2 and after three it was 11-3. In the fourth quarter, the Aztecs scored six goals, including Werner's two, to seal the victory for SDSU.

Goalkeeper Sarah Kilgore recorded six saves for the Aztecs.

In the featured game of the evening, SDSU went into the contest looking to avenge last week's 7-2 loss to the Gauchos.

The Aztecs trailed after one period, 3-2, but responded with four goals of their own in the second to take a 6-2 lead.

Over the final two periods, UC Santa Barbara scored six goals to SDSU's three to force overtime. But in the extra period, the Guachos scored the game winner to claim the 10-9 victory.

Three Aztecs did all the damage in a losing effort as Werner notched five goals, Elana Cervantes added a hat trick of her own and Dominique Delgado chipped in with one.

Kilgore stopped a season-high 12 shots.

Day two of the Gaucho Invitational will continue tomorrow with the Aztecs taking on UC Irvine at RecCenter Pool. The game is slated for a 9:10 a.m. start.
