Schofield Barracks, Hawai'i - The San Diego State men's golf team opened its spring season Wednesday with 18 holes of play in the John Burns Invitational, hosted by the University of Hawaii.

The Aztecs shot a solid opening round of 280, four under par, to hold a share of fourth place. Five of the 21 competing teams are ranked in the nation's top 25.

San Diego State's Gilberto Rodrigez fired a four-under 68 and is tied for fifth in the individual race with teammate Andrew Scott just one shot back.

San Diego State's other individuals included Aaron Choi (72), Josh Warthen (71) and Chad Moscovic (75).

Arizona and New Mexico are tied for the team lead after shooting 274 (-14).

The Aztecs opened play in a light drizzle before the sun came out during the second portion of the round. San Diego State will tee off at 10 a.m. Pacific time on Thursday and will conclude play Friday in the 54-hold event.

The tournament is being played on the Leilehua Golf Course in Schofield Barracks. The Aztecs won the John Burns in 2002 and finished second in 2003.
