SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's golf team is in eighth place after day one action of the 2005 Bay Area Classic in San Jose, Calif. The Aztecs carded a 40-over 328 Monday at the par-72, 6,095-yard Golf Club at Boulder Ridge in windy conditions. Fresno State leads the way with a 22-over 310, while SDSU is just two strokes behind seventh place Cal Poly in the 13-team field.
Aztec sophomore Jamie Oliver (Los Alamitos, Calif.) and freshman Jackie Kazarian (Dana Point, Calif.) are tied for 18th place individually among the 70 participants with matching first round scores of eight-over 80. Oliver carded a 40 on both the front and back nine, while Kazarian had the team's lowest nine holes of the day with a 39, followed by a 41 in the second half.
Freshman MacKenzie Swecker (Winnemucca, Nev.) is three strokes behind Oliver and Kazarian with a 11-over 83, followed by senior Megan Mulhaupt (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.), who is tied for 40th with a first round 85. Freshman Anna Booth (Coffs Harbour, Australia) struggled in the Aztecs' first spring tournament action with an 88.
Brigham Young's Rachel Newren and Ole Miss' Katie Davidson are tied for the individual lead with two-over 74, just one shot in front of another group of two.
SDSU finishes out its first spring tournament of the season Tuesday with round two action, beginning at 8 a.m. (PST).
