RALEIGH, N.C. - Just as it did on Friday, San Diego State fell behind early and was unable to recover as it dropped a 8-5 decision to North Carolina State at Doak Field in Raleigh Saturday afternoon. The win was the third straight for the Wolfpack, which improved to 6-1 on the year while the Aztecs dropped to 2-6.
The Wolfpack opened the scoring with three runs in the first inning off SDSU starting pitcher Alex Hinshaw. An opening walk, double and single to start the inning followed by a single later in the frame accounted for the NC State scoring.
San Diego State mounted a comeback with single runs in the third and fourth t cut the margin to 3-2. Catcher Jordan Swaydan's first home run of the season accounted for the opening run for the visitors, and Brock Ungricht's two-out RBI single made it a one-run contest.
However, North Carolina State took control of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring four times with two outs off Hinshaw, who saw his record fall to 0-2 on the year. The big blow was a three-run home to deep left field by first baseman Aaron Bates, his second in two days off Aztec pitching.
Meanwhile, Wolfpack starter Gib Hobson scattered six hits over his 5.2 innings, allowing just the two earned runs while striking out four and walking none. With the win, Hobson improved his record to 2-0.
The home team added a single run in the sixth on a leadoff triple by second baseman Matt Camp followed by a sacrifice fly by Catcher Jake Muyco.
The Aztecs again rallied late, scoring three times in the top of the seventh. After Garrick Evans' leadoff double and a single by Clayton Carson put runners on first and third, Jordan Swaydan's single to left center brought home the initial run of the inning. James Guerrero then walked to load the bases. Quintin Berry and Lance Zawadzki followed with fielder choices to first and second respectively with each being credited with a run batted in.
Wolfpack freshman Travis High, making his first appearance of the season, came on the eighth to pitch the final two innings to close out the game and pick up his first save. He faced the minimum of six batters, striking out two.
Jordan Swaydan finished the game with two hits and three runs batted in while teammates Clayton Carson and Brock Ungricht also collected a pair of hits apiece.
The Aztecs and Wolfpack conclude their three-game series Sunday afternoon (Feb. 20) at 1:00 p.m. (EST) at Doak Field.
