SAN DIEGO - San Diego State put seven runs on the board in the first inning and went on to a 15-6 victory over Cal State Northridge Tuesday evening at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The Aztecs used three hits with four walks, a hit batter and an error to jump out to the early lead.

The win was SDSU's second in its last three games as it improve3d to 2-5 on the season. The Matadors, meanwhile, saw their record drop to 2-4-1.

San Diego State opened its half of the first with a leadoff single by center fielder Quintin Berry. After a fielder's choice, Matador pitcher Eric Sweeney (0-1) walked the next three batters with Lance Zawadzki picking up an RBI with a bases-loaded free pass.

With the bases still loaded, Brock Ungricht hit a grounder to third, but Chase McGuire's throw to the plate hit Aztec base runner James Guerrero, allowing him to score. That was followed by the big blow of the inning, a three-run triple down the right field line by senior Jake McLintock.

A groundout to second off the bat of Clayton Carson and a single to left by Garrick Evans brought home the final two runs of the inning.

Aztec starting pitcher James Scott was dominating over the first two frames, striking out four of the seven batters he faced, However, he had trouble in the third, sandwiching three walks around a double as the Matadors closed the gap to 7-3.

At that point, freshman right-hander Andres Esquibel was then called on in relief and he was able to end the rally. Esquibel (1-0) went 2.2 innings, allowing two hits with one strikeout to pick up his first win as an Aztec.

San Diego State effectively put the game on ice as it scored seven more times over the fourth and fifth innings.

In the fourth, the Aztecs used five hits to score three times, getting RBIs from James Guerrero, Tim O'Brien and Brock Ungricht. The four-run fifth was highlighted by a two-out two-run single by Jake McLintock.

Garrick Evans, who actually entered the game as a pinch hitter when SDSU sent 12 men to the plate in the first inning, finished the evening with three hits, a pair of runs scored and a run batted in. McLintock, who was 2-for-4, had five RBI. Three other Aztecs had two hits apiece including Quintin Berry, Brian Kinsman and Lance Zawadzki.

San Diego State now begins a string of seven straight road games as it travels to Raleigh, N.N., this weekend to face North Carolina State in a three-game series. The first game is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 18, at 3:00 p.m. (EST).
