SAN DIEGO - San Diego State ended a four-game losing streak as it recorded its inaugural win of the 2005 season while splitting a doubleheader with Santa Clara Sunday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The Aztecs won game one of the twin bill by a score of 8-4, but dropped the nightcap 8-3.
In game one, SDSU jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the second innings on a one-out double by Jake McLintock, an RBI single by Lance Zawadzki, and a two-run homer by Tim O'Brien.
After Santa Clara got a run back in top of the fourth, the Aztec answered with four more in their half of the inning to take a 7-1 lead. Curt Mendoza had an RBI single while Quintin Berry (two RBI) and James Guerrero (one RBI) had doubles later in the inning.
Sophomore right-hander Bruce Billings went five innings to pick up his first win of the year. After giving up three runs in the fifth, he gave way to Shaun Burkle, who pitched 3.1 scoreless innings to help preserve the win. Ben Coon finished up on the mound for the Aztecs, getting the final two outs in the ninth.
Zawadzki had three hits in the opening game with an RBI and three runs scored. Left fielder Curt Mendoza also added three hits including a double and RBI.
In the second game, three Santa Clara hurlers held the San Diego State offense in check over the first eight innings while the Bronco offense scored in every inning but one from the third on.
The visitors took a 5-0 lead after their half of the fifth, touching up SDSU starter Alex Hinshaw for four of those runs on five hits. Hinshaw, making his first start as an Aztec, fell to 0-1 on the season even though he struck out six batters in 3.1 innings of work.
Santa Clara's Michael Thompson, who had homered in game one, added a second in the nightcap to give the Broncos an early 3-1 lead. Teammate Robert Perry later added a solo blast in the ninth to round out the scoring. Right fielder Jason Matteucci finished the game with three hits and three runs scored as well.
Michael Stutes, on in relief of starter Patrick Overholt, picked up the in to improve to 2-1, giving up one run over the middle three innings.
The Aztecs were unable to come up with a key hit when it counted as they left a total of 10 men on base in the contest. Four of their 11 hits came in the final inning when they scored a pair of consolation runs on an RBI single by Berry and a sacrifice fly by Guerrero.
Quintin Berry had two more hits in the second game as did teammate Jake McLintock and Tim O'Brien. Over the course of the two contests, Berry and Lance Zawadzki finished with four hits apiece.
Up next for San Diego State is a home contest against Cal State Northridge on Tuesday (Feb. 15) at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Following that game, 11 of the team's next 12 contests will be on the road.
