SAN DIEGO (AP) - Marcus Slaughter had 16 points and 11 rebounds as San Diego State topped Brigham Young 66-58 on Monday in Mountain West Conference play for their first season sweep of the Cougars since 1985.
Trimaine Davis set career highs with 12 points and eight rebounds in his fifth start of the season in helping the Aztecs (10-11, 4-4) end a three-game losing streak.
Slaughter increased San Diego State's lead to 62-58 with 1:05 left when he connected on two free throws. The Cougars' Mike Hall, who recorded a career-high 24 points, then missed two free throws with 54.8 seconds left, and the Aztecs closed out the scoring.
Hall went 8-of-12 from the field and hit all of his other four free-throw attempts.
Jimmy Balderson scored 10 of his 14 points in the second half for Brigham Young (8-15, 2-6), which faced a 33-26 halftime deficit. The Cougars used a 13-0 run to take a 40-39 lead with 14:15 remaining in the second half.
Reserve Tyler Smith also set a career high with 12 points for the Aztecs, who reached the .500 level after eight league games for the first time since joining the conference in 1999-00.
In the first half, the Aztecs moved ahead 24-16 with eight straight points. Brandon Heath, who scored 13 points, had a steal and layup to increase the lead to 31-24 with 1:11 before halftime.
