SAN DIEGO - San Diego State junior Benedikt Stronk has been named the Mountain West Conference's first men's tennis player of the week. The honor is the first of his career and comes after winning both his singles and doubles matches in the 2005 season opener at Southern California on Jan. 22.
Stronk, from Berlin, Germany, defeated No. 97 Johan Berg of Southern California in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, at number two singles.
In doubles action, Stronk teamed with sophomore Chris Groh at number two doubles and took down USC's duo of Berg-Jeff Kazarian, 7-6 (6).
Stronk, who is in his first year at the Division I level, was one of two players to win a singles match and was one-half of the doubles team that recorded the only victory for the Aztecs in doubles play.
Eighth-ranked Southern California edged No. 71 SDSU, 5-2.
San Diego State returns to the court as it hosts both UC Riverside and Northern Arizona this Saturday at the La Jolla Tennis Club. Start time for the UC Riverside match is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. with the Northern Arizona match to follow at 2:30 p.m.
