SAN DIEGO - Travis Hanour, a senior on the San Diego State men's basketball team, has decided that he will not play or practice the remainder of the season due to injury, ending his collegiate career, head coach Steve Fisher announced today. Hanour will remain with the team and serve as a student assistant coach the rest of the season.

"Travis, who has dealt with injuries in both knees, has been advised by the doctors not to play," Fisher said. "He will no longer be practicing or playing with this team, but will be a designated student assistant coach who will hopefully be able to help our staff, both in preparation and with our players on the practice floor and on gameday.

"I feel very badly for Travis, but he still will be a valuable member of our program. Travis has done a really good job of dealing with it emotionally. He has his degree in sight is looking forward to helping us win any way he can."

A native of Laguna Beach, Calif., Hanour, played in three games this season but has not played in a game since the Dec. 14 contest against Saint Mary's. After playing in 20 games as a freshman on an Arizona team that advanced to the national championship game, Hanour transferred to San Diego State prior to his sophomore season. He played in 18 games during the 2002-03 season and made eight starts on that squad which advanced to the second round of the postseason NIT. In 2003-04, Hanour missed the entire season due to tendonitis in both knees.

He ends his college career with 41 games played, 120 points, 86 rebounds and 32 assists.

Plagued by injuries throughout his career, Hanour most recently had surgery on his right knee on April 7 to alleviate chronic tendonitis. That is the same surgery that had been performed on his left knee 51 weeks earlier.

Hanour remains on scholarship and is scheduled to participate in University commencement ceremonies this May and is on pace to receive his bachelor's degree in sociology this summer.
