LOS ANGELES - The 71st-ranked San Diego State men's tennis team opened the 2005 campaign on the road Saturday and dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 8 Southern California at Marks Stadium in the season opener for both schools.
In singles action, junior Benedikt Stronk defeated No. 97 Johan Berg in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, at number two singles. At the number five position, sophomore Chris Groh recorded the Aztecs other singles victory with a, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, win over Kaes Van't Hof.
In addition to posting SDSU's singles wins, the two paired up at number two doubles to defeat the duo of Johan Berg/Jeff Kazarian, 7-6 (6).
The Aztecs will be in action next Saturday when they host a morning/afternoon doubleheader. Beginning 9:30 a.m., SDSU will face UC Riverside with a date with Northern Arizona to follow at 2:30 p.m.
