San Diego - For the first time in several years, the annual San Diego State Baseball Alumni Game proved to be no contest as the 2005 Aztecs defeated a group of former players by a score of 22-1. The SDSU varsity put on an offensive display from the start, scoring in every inning but one against a total of seven alumni hurlers.
The Aztecs came out swinging, getting three runs in the first on consecutive hits by Clayton Carson, James Guerrero, Brock Ungricht and Lance Zawadzki off alumni starter Vic Martin. However, it was Martin who was the only pitcher to hold the varsity scoreless in an inning as he struck out two of the four batters he faced in the second.
Zawadzki's two-run homer, deep over the wall in right field, keyed a four-run third inning as the Aztec built an 8-0 lead after four frames.
Sophomore Brett Douglas opened the contest on the mound for the Aztecs, going three innings and allowing one infield hit while striking out four.
The Alumni rallied for their lone run of the afternoon in the top of the fifth when Brandon Rogers led off with a walk and advanced to second on a ground out to first by Landon Burt. Ryan Wilson then deposited a base hit to right to drive in Rodgers.
From that point, it was all Aztecs offensively as six pitchers held the Alumni to a total of three hits over the nine innings. SDSU hitting standouts on the day included freshman James Scott (3-for-4, double, four RBI) and sophomore first baseman Brent Spirnak (3-for-3, triple, 4 RBI).
San Diego State opens its 2005 season on Friday, Feb. 4, when it host Texas in the first contest of s three-game series at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The Longhorns were the runners-up at last year's College World Series and are ranked first in the nation in Collegiate Baseball's preseason poll.
