SAN DIEGO - San Diego State linebacker Matt McCoy has announced that he is entering the National Football League draft.
The Tustin High School product said the decision to leave the Aztec program was a difficult one.
"The San Diego State coaches have been nothing but supportive of me and they have made me a better player," McCoy said. "But playing in the NFL has always been a dream of mine and something I have been working for my entire life.
"It will be difficult to leave San Diego State," he added. "The football program is heading in the right direction as you can tell by the recruiting classes. Who wouldn't want to play here?"
McCoy has recorded 215 tackles over the last two seasons. He was a second-team all-Mountain West choice as a sophomore and junior and was named national defensive player of the week following his 18-tackle effort at No. 17 Michigan. That performance included 17 solo tackles.
"We always support the players looking into their options," Aztec head coach Tom Craft said. "Matt researched the situation and gathered the information that led him to his decision. We are excited for him and hope it works out the way he wants it to work out."
