DALLAS - The San Diego State women's basketball team shot just 27.6 percent from the field and was unable to hit a three-pointer, falling to Southern Methodist, 80-36, Wednesday night at Moody Coliseum. With the loss, the Aztecs dropped to 3-5 on the season, while the Mustangs improved to a perfect 7-0 at home and 9-1 in 2004-05.
Senior Lindsey Casey (Odessa, Texas) scored nine of her team game-high 11 points in the first half for her third straight and fourth overall double-figure scoring effort of the season. Michelle Strawberry (Corona, Calif.) added seven points, while Casey pulled down seven rebounds.
The first basket of the game by freshman Ashley Cheesman (Orem, Utah) turned out to be the team's lone lead on the night at 2-0. SMU then went on a 10-0 run, before Casey put up the first two of her nine first-half points at 10-4. The Mustangs then held the Aztecs scoreless for the next four minutes, before Casey stopped the bleeding with a bucket at 24-6. Texas native, SDSU freshman Kate Eveland (Southlake, Texas), got the team into double-figures with her only two points of the half at the 4:08 mark and the Aztecs trailed 40-18 going into the locker room.
The second half did not prove to be much better, as the Aztecs kept the deficit to 22 points through the first seven and a half minutes, before SMU went up big and went on to claim the 80-36 win.
The Mustangs, who owned the boards (58-28), had three players in double-figures, including Katie Gross who scored 26 points and made six of her seven three-point shots.
San Diego State plays its final non-conference road game next Tuesday, as the Aztecs travel to Lawrence, Kan., and the University of Kansas for a 7 p.m. (CST) tip-off with the Jayhawks.
