SAN DIEGO - On a night when three players were honored in their final home match, the San Diego State fell short of a win as Brigham Young recorded a 3-0 (36-34, 30-15, 30-22) victory over the Aztecs in Peterson Gym Saturday evening. An emotional extra-point loss in the first game seemed to take its toll SDSU dropped its fifth straight to fall to 3-22 overall and 3-9 in the Mountain West Conference. BYU, meanwhile, improved to 16-9 and 8-4 in league action.
Kara Moriarty, Kari Dykema and Lucilla Xavier were all making their final appearance in Peterson Gym and all three saw action in the match. Moriarty finished with a game-high 11 kills and also had five digs and a solo block. Dykema contributed nine digs from her libero position while Xavier had a kill and a block.
SDSU junior hitter Melissa Stapley hit double figures in kills with 10 while the tandem of Ashley Bowker and Audra Dent had five blocks apiece.
BYU was led by Lexi Brown and Lindsy Hartsock who finished the night with 11 and 10 kills respectively.
Game one was a classic contest between two evenly matched squads that were never separated by more than two points. With the game into extra points at 34-34, BYU got back-to-back blocks by the combination of Hartsock and Lauren Richards to put away the victory. SDSU's Stapley had six kills in the game as did both Lindsey Metcalf and Richards for the Cougars.
In the second game, San Diego State jumped out to a 7-4 advantage only to see the visitors run off six straight points and take an 11-7 lead. The Aztecs worked their way back into the contest at 15-17 before BYU ran off the final 13 points of the game with Hartsock serving out for the Cougars. Lexi Brown had seven kills to lead Brigham Young as it held SDSU to a -.063 hitting percentage.
Game three was tied at 10-10 when BYU ran off four straight points and never looked back, as they built on that lead to win by a final margin of eight points to secure the match victory. Hartsock had six kills for the cougars while teammate Erica Lott chipped in with five. SDSU meanwhile got four kills apiece from Lindsey Mahan and Moriarty.
Up next for San Diego State is a pair of road matches as it concludes its 2004 conference schedule. Next weekend's road trip begins with a stop in Colorado Springs where the Aztecs will face Air Force on Friday, Nov. 12, at 7:00 p.m. (MST)
