PROVO, Utah - Freshmen Lisa Nielsen and Tiphanie Elliott each scored goals to pace the San Diego State women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over New Mexico in the quarterfinal round of the 2004 Mountain West Conference Championship Wednesday night at South Stadium. With the victory, the Aztecs (7-7-5) advance to the semifinals to play No. 7 Air Force, at 7 p.m. (MST) Thursday.

After a sluggish first 20 minutes in which no shots were attempted by either team, SDSU started to attack the Lobo net. The Aztecs first chance came in the 36th minute when freshman Casey Davidson beat the New Mexico goalkeeper, but just missed the net wide right.

Three minutes later, SDSU got on the scoreboard when Nielsen headed in her first collegiate career goal. Junior Amanda Swiader dribbled down the left-center of the field and found a breaking Amanda McKay. McKay sent a perfect cross to Nielsen who headed in the shot to the left side of the net from 10 yards out.

The Aztecs headed into intermission with a 3-1 lead in shots and 1-0 advantage in corner kicks.

SDSU scored its second goal of the game at the 72:46 mark when senior Gina Salinas slid a pass to a wide-open Elliott who settled the ball and shot it in the upper-right corner of the net from 11 yards away. The goal was Elliott's first goal of her collegiate career.

Senior goalkeeper Sophia Perez made two saves to earn her 10th shutout, sixth in seven games, as the relentless Aztec defense limited the Lobos to three shots, the fewest by an SDSU opponent all season.

The Aztecs outshot New Mexico, 6-3, for the match, while each team had two corner kicks.
