SDSU Football Hands Out Annual Awards

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State football program held its annual awards banquet on Tuesday evening and presented 12 awards to 19 student-athletes. Those in attendance included the entire football team and coaching staff, as well as, the athletic administration. John Kentera of The Mighty 1090 served at the event's emcee.

The John Simcox Memorial Most Valuable Player award went to linebacker Kirk Morrison for the second straight year. The senior was also the co-recipient of the President's Award for Highest Standards of Academic & Athletic Excellence, sharing the honor with offensive lineman Matt Callahan and Pat Justman, and defensive back Shane Russell. Morrison also received the Dr. R. Hardy/C.E. Peterson Captain's Award along with quarterback Kevin O'Connell and linebacker Stephen Larsen.

Another multiple award winner was senior linebacker Heath Farwell. The Corona, Calif., native took home the Iron Man Special Teams Player award and the Byron H. Chase Memorial award, along with junior wide receiver Jeff Webb.

Most Improved Player of the Year - Brandon Bornes (Offense), Blake Lobel (Defense)
Special Teams Player of the Year - Kyle Conerly
Most Inspirational - Robert Ortiz, Marviel Underwood
Aztec Coaches Award - Josh Dean, Mike Kracalik
