Volleyball Falls To 13th-Ranked USD In Three Games

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State concluded its 2004 season, dropping a 3-0 decision (30-15, 30-18, 30-26) to 13th-ranked San Diego Tuesday night in the Jenny Craig Pavilion on the USD campus. The victory moved the Toreros, the West Coast Conference champion, to 22-4 on the year. The Aztecs ended the year wit a record of 4-25.

Audra Dent led SDSU with seven kills and four block assists while senior Kara Moriarty had six to go along with four digs and a block. The Aztecs finished with five team blocks on the evening, four of those coming from Lindsey Mahan.

The University of San Diego had a pair of players finish in double figures in kills as senior Devon Forster had 14 and Emily Haas 11. The Toreros also totaled 11 service aces with senior Katie Kahlweiss recording five.

The Toreros came out quickly in game one, jumping out to a 7-0 lead behind the serving of Emily Haas, who had a pair of aces during the run. USD served up a total of seven aces in the game and hit .345 compared to .074 for the Aztecs. Devon Forster had four kills and three digs while SDSU was led by three kills from Melissa Stapley.

In the second game, the teams traded points early up to 7-7 before USD went on an 8-0 run to take control of the contest. Emily Haas had six kills for the Toreros while Forster had three more. For SDSU, Kara Moriarty had four kills while Lindsey Mahan and Audra Dent had three blocks apiece, but the Aztecs hit just -.027 as a team.

The third game saw the Aztecs stay within striking distance as they trailed by just three at 19-16. However, USD scored nine of the next 11points to take a 28-19 lead. SDSU rallied late, but fell short, losing by four points. Forster continued to dominate at the net, adding seven kills to her total with Moira McCarthy chipping in with seven. For the Aztecs, Audra Dent finished strong, getting six kills in the final game.

The match marked the final collegiate appearance of three members of the San Diego State team: outside hitter Kara Moriarty, defensive specialist Kari Dykema. And middle blocker Lucilla Xavier.
