SAN DIEGO (AP) - Brandon Heath hit a short jump shot with 46 seconds left to put San Diego State ahead for the first time in the second half, then made four free throws for the Aztecs in the final seconds for a 69-65 victory over Monmouth Monday night.
Down 51-37 seven minutes into the second half, the Aztecs (1-1) recorded the largest second-half comeback in five-plus seasons under coach Steve Fisher.
Heath finished with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Marcus Slaughter led the Aztecs with 18 points.
Matt Thomas converted a 12-foot jumper to pull San Diego State even at 63 with 1:47 to go, and Heath hit the go-ahead shot on the Aztecs' next possession.
Heath then intercepted a pass (0-2) under the Monmouth basket and was fouled. He sank two free throws for a 67-63 lead with 21 seconds to play.
Dejan Delic scored a career-high 18 points for Monmouth (0-2), all on 3-pointers. The Hawks led 31-28 at halftime after opening a 26-8 lead nine minutes into the game.
The Aztecs had a 41-20 lead in rebounding and a 33-16 advantage from the free-throw line.
