SAN DIEGO - SDSU sophomore Jamie Oliver (Los Alamitos, Calif.) improved 10 strokes from her first round score, posting an even-par 72 Tuesday in the second round of the 3rd Annual Las Vegas Founders Women's Collegiate in Henderson, Nev. The Aztecs remain in 16th place overall, despite a second round 303 (+15), a team season-best for 18 holes, at the par-72, 6,194-yard Anthem Country Club. SDSU has a two-round total of 52-over par 628 (325-303) and trails tournament leader UNLV, which is at 12-over par 588.
Oliver had four birdies in her final nine holes to match her career best round of even-par 72. Oliver's 72 is the team's best individual 18-hole performance of the year by two strokes and is 10 better than her first-round score Monday of 82. Oliver's 72 tied for the eighth-best on the day out of the 90 golfers, vaulting her from 67th to 35th in the individual standings.
All but one of the Aztecs' five golfers at the tournament saw an improvement over their first-round score. Freshmen Anna Booth (Coffs Harbour, Australia) and Jackie Kazarian (Dana Point, Calif.) both finished at four-over par 76 in the second round, improving by eight and 11 strokes, respectively. Senior Veronica Ojeda (San Diego, Calif.) continued her steady play with a 79 (+7) and senior Megan Mulhaupt (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) was just one stroke off her team best score a day earlier also carding a seven-over par 79.
In the overall standings, Mulhaupt is tied for 52nd with a two-round total of 157 (+13), while Booth and Ojeda are deadlocked in 64th place at 16-over par 160. Kazarian is tied for 75th, moving up eight spots with a 163 (+19) for the tournament.
Three golfers - UNLV's Hwanhee Lee, Missouri's Maria Ohlsson and San Francisco's Jessica Potter - are currently tied for the tournament individual lead after two rounds at one-over 145.
Wednesday's third and final round gets underway at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. This week's tournament is SDSU's final action of the fall season, before starting up again in mid-March 2005.
