SAN DIEGO - For the first time in the history of the Mountain West Conference, two players from the same league school are sharing a player of the week honor. San Diego State linebackers Kirk Morrison and Heath Farwell are the MWC's co-defensive players of the week following their performances in Saturday's win at Air Force.
A third Aztec, freshman kicker Garrett Palmer, has been named as the league's special teams player of the week.
Morrison and Farwell both were credited with 19 tackles in the 37-31 victory at Air Force. The tackle total is the fifth best in school history by a player and their combined total of 38 ties Ty Youngs (21) and Bill Ferguson (17) (vs. Iowa St., Nov. 27, 1971) for the most ever by two Aztecs in the same game.
Both players had seven solo tackles and 12 assisted tackles in the tough conditions in Colorado Springs. Along with his tackles total, Morrison recovered a fumble and his interception at the goal line with 13 seconds remaining in the game clinched the Aztec victory. The player of the week honor is the first for Farwell and the second for Morrison this season and the third of his career.
Farwell's 19 tackles were complimented by an interception and the two fumbles he caused. One fumble set up an Aztec score and another halted an Air Force drive at the San Diego State goal line. Farwell leads the Mountain West with five fumbles caused this season.
Palmer booted three field goals in the victory, earning him his first player of the week accolade. He was part of the Aztec freshman class that scored 31 of the team's 37 points.
San Diego State will complete its season Saturday night when its hosts UNLV at 7:05 p.m.
