SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's crew team wrapped up its fall season with two first-place finishes at the San Diego Fall Classic Sunday morning at Mission Beach. The "A" collegiate eight and "A" novice eight boats each won their respective races, while the "B" boats in each event took fourth.
"We had two solid wins this weekend and great performances from our other eight's," said second-year head coach Jennifer Zebroski. "We ended the fall season on a high note which will hopefully lead to more wins in the spring."
In the 15-boat collegiate eight event, the SDSU "A" boat won the 3.5-mile course in 21 minutes, 38 seconds, bettering last year's time by 49 seconds (22:27). Loyola Marymount (22:21) and San Diego (22:22) finished well back in second and third place, respectively.
"The varsity eight "A" boat had an amazing race," Zebroski said. "The women stuck to their race plan and maintained a good flow during the race. I am pleased that we were able to pick up speed during the last week of racing so we could push through Loyola Marymount, who beat us by seven seconds last weekend. I am looking forward to winter training and the upcoming spring season."
Also in collegiate eight competition, the Aztec "B" boat was fourth (22:48), while the lightweights took seventh (23:41) and the "C" boat finished eighth (23:44).
In a field of 22 boats, the women's novice "A" boat took first-place honors in 22:55, outdistancing Loyola Marymount by two seconds, while the "B" boat was fourth in 23:40.
SDSU will participate in its annual row-a-thon outside Cox Arena on Friday, Nov. 19, at the men's basketball season opener against UC Santa Barbara. The crew team will start rowing at 4 p.m. and continue until the team has completed 1 million meters.
