SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's basketball team kicked-off its 2004-05 season with a 69-51 exhibition win Wednesday against Team Concept, a squad of former college players, at Cox Arena.

"Tonight's game gave us a chance to evaluate what we have done on the practice court thus far," Tomey said. "We saw this game as a test and we did some good things. We got up and down the floor well, had a nice rhythm going and were able to get the ball into the post. There's always things that we can do to get better and we know that it's going to get tougher."

Sophomore guard Michelle Elliott (Pasco, Wash.) posted team highs of 12 points, four assists and four steals to lead the Aztecs. She was 5-of-11 from the floor and also added seven rebounds. Freshman forward Ashley Cheesman (Orem, Utah) fell one rebound short of a double-double in her first career outing with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Eleven of the 12 Aztecs to see playing time scored at least two points, while the squad combined to attempt 23 three-pointers, converting on eight of them.

SDSU never trailed in the game, going on a 14-0 run at the 10:58 mark of the first half to go up by 23 points at 34-11. The Aztecs led by 20 points at the half (41-21) and boasted their largest advantage of the night at 28 points when freshman Marin McCue (Calgary, Alberta) hit a three-pointer to push the score out to 60-32.

Team Concept would take advantage of SDSU's 18, second-half turnovers to get to within 19 points at 66-47 with 1:54 remaining on a lay-up by Assimina Fuentes. The Aztecs answered immediately with their last bucket of the game - a three-pointer by Cheesman - and finished out the night with a 69-51 victory.

Aztec alumna and Hall of Fame member Falisha Wright had nine points and six steals for Team Concept in 31 minutes. LaTasha Washington led Team Concept with 15 points, including 11 in the first 20 minutes.

The Aztecs open their regular season across town when they face rival University of San Diego, Nov. 23, at 5 p.m. at Jenny Craig Pavilion. The game will be broadcast live on Channel 4 San Diego and will also be available via the internet (audio only) at www.goaztecs.com.
