PROVO, Utah - The San Diego State women's soccer team and BYU played to a double overtime, 0-0 tie, in the Mountain West Conference season-opener for both teams on Thursday night in Provo, Utah. The Cougars (4-7-3, 0-0-1 MWC) held a 11-9 edge in shots against the Aztecs (3-6-4, 0-0-1 MWC) for the game.

"Our defense played well again," said first-year head coach Mike Giuliano. "Alexis (Solovij) moved back to sweeper due to an early injury and she played brilliantly."

Senior goalkeeper Sophia Perez made three saves, including a diving save with less than a minute remaining in the second half, to earn her fifth shutout of the season. In 12 starts in 2004, Perez is 3-5-4 with a 0.78 goals against average. The Aztec single-season record for goals against average is 0.61 set by Katherine Judkins in 1998.

"Sophia is amazing," added Giuliano. "She always keeps us in the game."

SDSU's best chance to score came late in the second half when junior Erica Lopez had her shot saved by BYU's diving goalkeeper Erika Woodbury.

Senior Courtney Burns, sophomore Jen Klunder and freshman Lisa Nielsen each had two shots to lead the Aztec offense.

SDSU will stay in the state of Utah, playing defending MWC champion Utah at 1 p.m. (MST) Saturday.
