LARAMIE, Wyo. - Playing without two of its regular starters for the second straight night, San Diego State dropped a 3-0 decision (30-23, 30-25, 30-22) to the Wyoming Cowgirls in Laramie Saturday evening. The loss was the third straight for the Aztecs, who saw their record dip to 3-20 overall and 3-7 in the Mountain West Conference. Wyoming, which won for the third time in its last four outings, improved to 13-10 (6-5 MWC).
SDSU was without outside hitter Kara Moriarty (ankle) and libero Aime Cordeiro (knee). In their absence, junior Melissa Stapley anchored the Aztec attack finishing with a team-high 13 kills, 10 digs and three blocks. It was Stapley's first career double double and the first for an Aztec this season.
Junior Ashley blocker led San Diego State at the next, posting a personal best two solo blocks and finishing with a total of eight blocks on the night. As a team, the Aztecs recorded nine team blocks to 5.5 for the Cowgirls.
Wyoming's Rachel Smith led all players with 21 kills while teammate Andrea Tuck chipped in with 11. UW hit .393 as a team over the three games while holding SDSU to a .231 attack percentage.
The Aztecs now return to San Diego for their final two home matches of the season next weekend. Up first is a contest against league-leading Utah on Friday, Nov. 5, at 7:00 p.m. in Peterson Gym.
