Final Stats

SAN JOSE - San Jose State scored two second-half goals and then relied on the outstanding play of keeper Daniel Benton to defeat the San Diego State men's soccer team 2-0. With the loss, the Aztecs fall to 2-10-1 and 2-4 in the MPSF. The Spartans improve to 2-9-1, 1-4 in the MPSF.

The first half was a defensive struggle as both teams limited scoring opportunities and the period concluded at a scoreless deadlock. SJSU put up nine shots in the period to SDSU's six, but the teams could muster only two shots on goal a piece.

The second half began the same as the first, with the teams trading field position and possession, but in the 68th minute, the Spartan's Marvin Sorto found Dylan Pender (68:15) on a corner kick attempt to put SJSU up 1-0. The Spartan's would not wait long to put the game out of reach as Sorto recorded his second assist in two minutes when he found Jose Flores for a goal (70:42) to cap the scoring at 2-0.

Top performers for SDSU include juniors Trey Meek and Heath Creager, with three shots a piece, and sophomore goalkeeper Tally Hall with five saves. San Jose State outshot the Aztecs for the game (20-14) and in the second half (11-8). The Spartans narrowly led SDSU in shot on goal attempts (7-6), but the Aztecs took more corner attempts 5-4.

SDSU returns home for a week break before taking on No. 3 New Mexico in the first game of a three-game homestand. The match against the Lobos is set for Oct. 24 at 1 p.m.
