Volleyball Defeats New Mexico, 3-0, In MWC Action

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State volleyball team got a balanced offensive effort as it defeated New Mexico, 3-0 (34-32, 30-15, 30-26), in Peterson Gym Friday evening. With the victory, the Aztecs (2-17 overall, 2-4 MWC) moved into sole possession of sixth place in the Mountain West Conference standings. The Lobos, meanwhile, saw their record fall to 7-10 on the year and 1-5 in league play.

SDSU was led by outside hitters Kara Moriarty and Melissa Stapley, who finished the night with 12 kills apiece. In addition, sophomore Audra Dent had 10 kills and hit .389 over the three games.

San Diego State was led at the net by junior middle blocker Ashley Bowker, who had seven blocks. Dent chipped in with four blocks of her own, but the Lobos held the team blocking advantage by an 11-8 count.

The Aztecs hit .290 for the match, their second-best mark of the season. After a tight game one that saw both teams holding potential match points, SDSU took control in game two and hit .393 while holding the visitors to a .030 attack percentage.

In the third game, SDSU took a 19-14 lead only to see UNM come back to close to within two points at 27-25. However, Audra Dent closed out the match with a pair of kills to seal the win.

San Diego State continues home action on Saturday (Oct. 16) when it hosts Air Force in Peterson Gym at 7:00 p.m.
